Varieties of cabochons
The cabochons are available in different shapes i.e., round, oval and even in irregular shapes based on the need. They are selected on the basis of the jewelry in which it is used i.e., necklace, bracelet, ring, ear ring or pendant etc. Size of the cabochon also matters here, as an earring demands a smaller one, while large stones are used in pendants. The settings for the cabochons vary with jewelry. So the cabochon is normally sold with its setting which suits the jewelry to be made. The possibility of providing a number of different shapes, which is not much possible with a normal stone, is an advantage of cabochons.
They are made with soft stones and the hard ones like diamond are usually avoided because the hard stones lose their glossiness and the ability to reflect if they are not faceted. The faceting process is not carried in the cabochons. Lapis, opal, turquoise, onyx, bone, shell and wood are the normally used stones from which the cabochons are made. The cutting process of the cabochon is simpler as compared to one formed with faceting. Even a simple cut and polished cabochon can give a great look to the jewelry.
While the front is in dome shape, the back surface usually is flat and rough. The rough back surface is helpful when one is fixing the cabochon to the jewelry using some adhesive. There is no need of adding any separate mounting for holding the cabochon. In some cases the back side is made hollow to lighten the color of cabochons.
Cabochons are available in the local markets dealing the jewelry accessories and the craft and hobby accessory shops. There is an online buy option also. In the case of online platforms, the dimensions of the cabochons are also mentioned separately. Thereby a buyer can choose the item based on his specifications, even if the he cannot check it manually. The online mode is the most preferred way of buying for most of the jewelry makers as it is more convenient and more varieties are available online.
Cabochons can be an alternative for the expensive stones as they are cheaper and simpler to make. The availability of a large variety of shapes make them a attractive buy for the jewelry makers and the jewelry lovers.
